DHL Press Meet Stills
Chennai, India – October 8, 2009: DHL, the world’s leading logistics company, together with the London School of Economics today revealed that when international trade rebounds in the medium term, it will likely see a rise in the proportion of trade, particularly in value terms, accounted for by the air express industry.

Frank Appel, CEO, Deutsche Post DHL, said, “Trade is critical to economic growth and to global development. It is heartening to note that the one agenda that the recent G20 agreed on was trade promotion. All governments agreed that trade will help in the short-term, and is a critical and inevitable part of long term economic development. As an economic integrator, our role is critical in ensuring that our services meet the growing needs of both developed and developing markets.”

The study “International trade, Express Logistics and Globalization: Part and Parcel of the Solution to Current Economic Challenges” revealed that the medium term outlook for global trade remains strong even as trade remains at best stagnant in the short run due to low availability of credit. However, when credit becomes freely available and trade rebounds, the study suggests that the return of trade will not benefit all countries equally.

The study has singled out cost of sea transport and the availability of review procedures as two key prominent factors that influence an economy’s appeal to attract international trade. The findings were based on an analysis of the cost and quality of logistics in Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) which account for 40 percent of the world’s population and 15 percent of the global economy and serve as exemplars to other emerging economies.

The cost of air-borne freight is relatively constant for the BRIC countries, compared to the cost of sea borne transport which varies much more dramatically around the world. Countries that provide low cost shipping logistics are more attractive to firms producing generally low value products that are sent by ship. India for example, has shipping costs that are more than 50 percent higher than those of China, while Russian shipping costs are over four times as high. Should India be able to reduce the cost of shipping to match Chinese levels, its trade would increase by 10 percent while Brazil and Russia’s trade would increase by 30 percent and by 50 percent respectively if they were to match China’s shipping costs.

The study shows that countries wanting to attract firms that use air express shipments need to look not so much at improving costs, but ensuring reliability and timeliness. In particular, countries where traders can ask for low cost, transparent review of any decisions made on the ground will have a higher share of world trade. The report also notes that effective review procedures are notably absent in the emerging economies, posing a challenge to shippers who intend to import or export time sensitive goods, such as high value “must have” electronics. The analysis has inferred that if these countries were to ensure the discipline and current availability of such reviews, China and India could increase trade by 20 percent, while Brazil and Russia would increase theirs by 30 percent during post crisis recovery.

“Transport and logistics costs in particular, outweigh tariffs as the greatest barriers to trade by a factor of 9:1. The study shows that countries which seek to be at the forefront of the next wave of globalization need to benchmark themselves against global best practices. Export reliant emerging economies can improve trade conditions to strengthen their international trade levels when the global economy rebounds,” said Frank Appel, CEO, Deutsche Post DHL

Reddy's chopper hit a cliff

Hyderabad, Sept 3 (PTI) The helicopter carrying Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy from Hyderabad to Chittoor yesterday deviated 18 km from its path towards east, near Rudrakoduru in the Nallamala forest range in Kurnool district, before it hit a cliff and crashed. "The chopper hit the cliff, crashed and exploded.

All the five persons in the ill-fated helicopter were burnt to death," state Finance Minister K Rosaiah and Chief Secretary P Ramakanth Reddy said here today. The chopper might have drifted from its path because of a large cloud formation due to inclement weather and ended up hitting the cliff, they said.

Except the tail portion, the body of the Bell-430 helicoper of AP Aviation Corporation was reduced to bits and pieces in the mishap. The helicopter crashed 10 km away from Rudrakoduru on a hostile terrain and army commandos had to slither down with the help of a rope from a rescue helicopter.

"Initially three bodies were traced and then the fourth one. It took a while to locate the fifth body.

We have identified the bodies from the dresses," Director General of Police S S P Yadav said. .

A six-pack Rajini in Sultan Still

Get set to whistle non-stop. Superstar Rajinikanth is all set to sport a six-pack. So what if it is in the animated film, Sultan the Warrior? The resemblance to Rajini is remarkable.

“We have been able to achieve a celluloid look because we motion captured him,” says Soundarya Rajinikanth, co-producer of Sultan the Warrior.

Soundarya checks the gray scale, then goes back to the original motion capture images. Forty eight cameras read only the glowing markers on a tight body suit that he wears. But Rajini does not merely go through the motions. His face, eyes, eyebrows, all come alive. “He is a director’s delight, and that is why we have been able to achieve a finish not attempted in India so far,” she adds.

Some of Hollywood’s best technicians have helped achieve the look. The facial animation (you have only around 200 muscles to replicate) has been done by Image Matrix, the company that did that fabulous work on Brad Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. “We have outsourced nearly 30 per cent of our work and it all needs to gel together,” adds Soundarya.

The USD 5 million project has been in the making for a few years now. “Maybe I was a little too optimistic that the full length animation film (one hour and 45 minutes running time, as of now) could be finished in two years time,” she says and adds “Internationally, it is known that an animation film with VFX takes much longer.”

With a background in multimedia, how did she turn to direction and where did she get the story idea from? “Oh, it’s appa’s ‘knot’ actually,” she says. “We normally discuss stories and when he mentioned this one, I wanted to make an animated film at once. He said, ‘Come back to me with a screenplay and we will see’. I did and he gave the thumbs up,” says Soundarya.

Nearly 70 per cent of the film is done, says Ravikumar Anandaraj, chief technical officer and executive producer of the film.

It is a film set in the Chola period. With Rahul Dev having been motion captured as the villain who is also a classical dancer and a martial arts expert, will this be a kind of Sultan-meets-Bruce Wayne film? “No, he is not Superman, he cannot fly, but Sultan will connect with the warrior in every one of us. It is a commercial film with love, betrayal, revenge, action and humour,” she explains.

What about the trademark Rajni punch dialogues? “Adikkira kaathula parakkura Sultan elai illada, malai, asaikka mudiyadhu (Sultan is not a leaf to blow away in the wind, but a mountain. He is unshakable), ” Soundarya reels off one of the dialogues written by her.

“Shooting him was an awesome experience, we never had to go beyond one take, though when I said, ‘Retake’ he always obliged.”

Soundarya is also planning a glossy coffee-table book on the making of Sultan the Warrior. The mock up scenes will also be screened in theatres.

The film will be released in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi simultaneously. The Japanese and English versions will be released “according to theatrical release norms of that country,” she adds. “India is a happening place today, which was not the case three years ago, when I participated at Mipcom at Cannes (where international content is showcased). Now, international distributors are keen to discuss our films complete with song, dance and the climax fight,” says Soundarya.

Any confusion over the release date? “All I want is to gift a good, classy product to my dad, and such a gift can be given at Diwali,” she says.

A Diwali release? She laughs and responds with a question, “Or maybe an early new year gift?”

“What matters is that he is the first southeast Asian star to be animated, and it will be a classy work, something India will be proud of. Our animation work has never crossed the oceans. It’s time it did,” says Soundarya.

So how are things with Warner Bros, with whom her company had tied up for joint ventures? She opens a mail from Richard Fox of Warner Bros and reads it. “‘It’s going good and we have many projects in the pipeline. Warner Bros has been and will continue to work with you. Together, our companies have a number of south Indian language projects in various stages of production. We will announce these projects at the appropriate time. But, any rumour that suggests otherwise is simply not true’, said Richard Fox executive vice-president International, Warner Bros,” she says. Source: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com

ANAMS MAN Fashion Show Stills

ANAMSMAN TM Fashion Show Stills
name that is synonymous with style in the Middle East. ANAMS, the ten-year-old brand from the Middle East
has finally found its way to India. ANAMS, from the house of Arif and Sons group, with their men’s line, ANAMS MAN TM, in an exquisite fashion show held at Taj Mount Road, opened doors in the country, with more possibilities and renewed options for one as they position themselves before the mirror everyday.

The collection, which will hit the racks of Gabanna (on Khader Nawaz Khan Road) on May 10th, premiered at the fashion show, featured casual and party wears for men’s wear and select women’s wear.

The show choreographed by Karun Raman, did see some celebrated faces off the ramps of the Lakme Fashion week, models like Priya Naik, Aliya Mohammed and Pallavi Singh to name a few. The styles for the show were created by Rina Mahtani and the hair was done by Schwarzkopf and make up by Madhu of La Change from Paris.

Wearability was perhaps the key word that ruled the ramp. Shirts, sans the usual ramp glitz (read over-the-top), formal and casual, linear cuts and not that in-your-face colours defined the evening, a good respite from the habitual fashion conventions (misconceptions) designers go by.. Overall, a neat collection and positively something that can complete your wardrobe. The complete line will be available across all leading stores in India soon.
