Manjal Veyil – different story, lacks logic

Manjal Veyil is a well attempted story to be different from the usual run-in-the mill romantic flicks, yet lacks logic at several points in the film. The relationship between college-mates Vijay and Gayatri (Prasanna, Sandhya), best friends since childhood is sometimes very misleading. Why will two people with platonic friendship give each other intense looks and break into a song is beyond anyone’s comprehension. The scene where Gayatri’s parents barely seem to know Vijay, though he’s supposed to be her best buddy since they were little ones also adds to the above point.

The film isn’t a story of triangular or unrequited love, but of two friends and a pair of lovers. Vijay (Prasanna) is close to his childhood friend Gayatri (Sandhya). Gayatri’s sister Savitri (Tarika) is engaged to be married even though she’s diabetic and has to be on regular doses of insulin, the father of the groom is willing to go ahead with the marriage because the girls’ dad has done a lot for him in life. Rajesh (R.K.), the man who is to marry Savitri, has a roving eye which now rests on Gayatri. Gayatri who realised this elopes with Vijay. At this point there is a flash back with Ravi (Bala) and the past unfolds. In the midst of it all is their poor lecturer (M S Bhaskar) who provides some laughs ? at his own expense.

Does love triumph or friendship forms the climax of the story.
