Pazhassi Raja Press Meet Stills
Period movies based on history forms a successful genre in South India, with several films such as Veerapandia Kattabomman rising up and shining bright time and again. Pazhassi Raja is a movie in that line, made with impressive cast including Mammootty, Sarath Kumar and beautiful Kaniha.
Recently, the film crew met with the press to discuss about the film which traces the life of Pazhassi Raja, the ruler of Malabar in the 18th century. Presenting a few facts based on sound research, the film attempts to rewrite the Indian history; with Pazhassi fighting for Indian freedom as early as 1795, the famous sepoy mutiny – considered to be the first Indian defiance and call for a freedom fight against British rule – is overshadowed and relegated to a second place. The question “who is the first man to fight for Indian freedom” seems to be a controversy that is revived whenever a historian makes a discovery.
The film stars Mammootty as Pazhassi Raja, who almost defeated the British with his army comprising chiefly of valiant peasants and no sophisticated weapons; Sarath Kumar plays his courageous general.
The Oscar man Rasool Pookutty, who is the sound engineer for this film, attended the press meet and was the centre of attraction. The talented and proud sound engineer regaled the press with his sense of humour; he jokingly added that nobody wanted his service before he won an Oscar but now everyone seems to be interested in working with him! Answering ever press reporter’s question patiently, Rasool stated that he found recording sound for Pazhassi Raja quite challenging, especially for war scenes and for the historic instruments which are obsolete now.
