Actress Nayantara Stills

Last year this time, Nayanthara was the clear number one by a mile, as Billa made her the hottest heroine in the south.

She had top heroes, commercial directors and banners backing her and 2008 started well with Yaaradi Nee Mohini going on to become a super hit. She had proved that she was an actress of substance.

But what followed was disastrous as she had a hat-trick of high profile films — Kuselan, Sathyam and Aegan bombing at the box-office. However, she has managed to hold on to the number one position due to the lack of competition and the trade’s belief that she has an opening.

Now, the big question being asked is whether she will be able to hold on to her numero uno position which has become precarious as she is facing tough competition from Tamannaah and Shriya. Her competitors have got some real hot projects with saleable heroes lined up for release. Adding to the threat are glam girls from Mumbai like Sameera Reddy and Bangalore babe Anushka, who have signed big movies opposite top heroes like Ajit and Vijay.

The real test for Nayan will be to overcome her career setbacks and fight fiercely to hold on to the crown. A lot is riding on Vijay’s Villu, directed by Prabhu Deva, which released yesterday. The film has to be a super hit for Nayan to retain her title as arch rival Tamannaah has her first release of the year, Padikathavan, coming up this Pongal.

Nayanthara, who was shooting for her Malayalam film Bodyguard in Kottayam said, “I know Villu is crucial for me as my last few films have received lukewarm response at the box-office. I’ve worked very hard for the film and I’m proud to be a part of it. It was fun and I thoroughly enjoyed working with the unit, director Prabhu Deva, hero Vijay, Vadivelu and cameraman Ravi Varman.

Producers Karunamoorthy and Arun Pandian made sure that we were comfortable and above all it was excellent team work. Everyone has put their hearts and souls into the film. It’s a typical Vijay film, something that will keep you entertained till the end, with not a dull moment.”
When asked what went wrong with her last year’s releases, the actress reminds you that she had a super hit in Yaaradi Nee Mohini, while the other three she just does not understand what went wrong. Says Nayanthara, “I can only choose roles that come to me and I put my heart and soul into each and every film that I do. Well, sometimes it just does not work in your favour.” She is confident that Villu will succeed and says, “I’m a big fan of Vijay. A song in Sivakasi with him gave me tremendous reach. I think director Prabhu brought out the best in me. On the whole, the film rocks.” After all, her mantra of single-minded determination, professionalism and hard work is sure to pay off. Tamanna is one of the promising young heroines who made it big in 2008. 2009 is going to be a momentous year for Tamanna and if all goes well, she may become the new ‘numero uno’ in Kollywood. Tamanna is now one of the busiest actors in Tollywood as well as Kollywood.

The producers of the Tamil film industry are lining up at her house to sign her for their films and cash in her popularity. Starting her acting career with films like Kedi and Kalloori, the charming actress has now got big projects in her kitty like Paiya, Ananda Thaandava, and Padikathavan. Neither to say with her popularity even her salary has risen tremendously. It’s been heard that the actress is now demanding six to seven millions per movie. It seems the diva is not only beautiful but has a sharp mind also. That’s why she knows the right time to keep her demands in the glamour industry. Now this is what we call beauty with brains.

Dhanush is on the verge of a hattrick of hits at the box-office. After the super hits Polladhavan and Yaaradi Nee Mohini, his Padikathavan is releasing this Pongal. The film is said to be a fun-laced masala comedy caper directed by Suraaj. Now, Dhanush’s Padikathavan has been pitted against Vijay’s Villu, leading to a classic confrontation at the box-office.

Sitting on the balcony of his 10th floor apartment that overlooks the sea, Dhanush says, “I have come a long way from my early days of struggle. I’ve tasted success and failure. All I want to do now is good films that work at the boxoffice. Padikathavan has all the essential ingredients to make it a racy entertainer.” The actor is confident that the film will work as it has been tailor-made for him.

Says Dhanush, “Suraaj gave me three story lines before I picked Padikathavan as it suits my on-screen image. I play the role of Rocky, a loafer who is a major embarrassment to his family. He is a 10th standard failure while the other members of his family are well placed. The film is about his struggle to come up in life.” Dhanush agrees that there is nothing new in the storyline, and feels it is the way a director packages the movie that gives the film its novelty. On the element of comedy in the film, he says, “The first half is funny and in the second half, Vivek, as Assault Arumugham, takes over and makes it a riot. There is no crass humour in the film.”

In Tamil cinema, each star has a particular image and it is good to work within these confines, feels the star. About the songs in Padikathavan, Dhanush says, “Mani Sharma’s music is peppy and youthful. Today, dappankuthu songs are an added attraction. Do you know that today, upmarket night clubs in Chennai play more dappankuthu Kollywood numbers than English songs?”

Dhanush confesses that his skinny, ordinary looks have become his calling card at the boxoffice. “When I was in school, I used to go to Elliot’s beach with my friends and I found that no girl gave me a second glance. I used to be unhappy about my looks, which are today my biggest strength.” Thanks to his early films and brother, Selvaraghavan, an image was created for him. In Padikathavan, when Tamannaah, the heroine, gives a dirty smirk at the hero, there is a punch line which has already become popular with the youth — “Enna mathiri pasangale partha pidikathu. Parka parka thaan pidikkum.” (You won’t like guys like me the first time. The more you see of me, the more you’ll like me. )

As the star himself says, “Selva created my screen image. Without his films I would still be roaming the streets of Chennai. I owe everything to him. He is my closest buddy.” About trying to take over his father-in-law, Rajini’s mantle, Dhanush says, “Long before I married Aishwarya, I was a big fan of Rajini sir and climbed on his huge cut-outs on the opening day of his films to put vibhuti on it. Today, as Rajini’s son-in-law, there are many restrictions on me. Although I try my best not to copy his style of acting, at times (a song in Polladhavan), I am influenced. But who hasn’t copied his style in Tamil films?” Source: timesofindia.com
