Rajnikanth smooths way for Kuselan in Karnataka

Tamil superstar Rajnikanth apologized on television to Kannadigas on Thursday evening it had the desired effect with Kuselan now being released across the State on Friday, with the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) leaders softening their stand against the actor. A statement by KRV president T A Narayana Gowda summed up the new mood: “Rajnikant has grown in stature by tendering the apology; we have no reason to stop the film now.”

The Tamil superstar Rajinikanth had made some comments about Hogennakal dam project and had also participated in a sit in of Tamil activists opposing it. This did not go down well with Kannadigas. Seeking cooperation for the film’s release, Rajnikanth said though he has fame, name and money, he is happy even today because he is not egoistic. “I have not forgotten that I was a (bus) conductor (in Bangalore at one time)”.

Meanwhile Rajnikanth starrer “Kuselan” fever is rising in the US. As part of the mega Tamil film’s promotion, several 25-feet-high cutouts of the south Indian superstar are being unveiled for the first time at several places to coincide with its release. The cutouts are part of the film’s promotion by Pyramid Saimira Group, parent company of FunAsia that operates the largest chain of theatres in North America showing Indian films. Pyramid has acquired the global rights of “Kuselan”. Rajnikanth is the second highest paid actor in Asia after Jackie Chan with a huge fan following worldwide.

Cheran`s foul words to the media

At the audio release function of Raman Thediya Seethai, Cheran lashed out at the media for publishing several news reports concerning him, which he claimed were false. The media present were not happy with this and demanded an instant apology.

A publication had recently carried an article that highlighted his ‘close relationship’ with his Pokkisham heroine Padmapriya. Hitting back at the press for carrying out the article, the emotionally unstable Cheran used the derogatory word, which incidentally rhymes with the nickname of the female lead.

“Only recently, a Tamil magazine published a story about me fondly calling Padmapriya with a pet name during the shoot of our next movie ‘Pokkisham,’” he said. Following it with a Tamil swear word, he angrily asked, “Why do you think I’ll have to fondle her? Is she my wife, my lover or my concubine?” he asked, in his vocal, verbally assaulting speech.

Meanwhile the function, which had a host of stars participating, including Balu Mahendra, Prakash Raj and Bharath, got off to an acidic start with director Ameer launching sarcastic verbal attacks on a few of his colleagues. This invited responses from directors Seeman and Karu Pazhaniappan who did not hold back when lashing out at Ameer.

Raman Thediya Seethai’ is directed by K P Jagannaath, a former assistant to director Cheran himself, and is produced by Moser Baer and Global One Studios Productions. It might be recalled that it was only during the launch of this movie that Cheran had cried to the media, asking them to stop romantically linking him with Navya Nair, who, incidentally, is one of the heroines in ‘Raman Thediya Seethai’ as well.
